The candidate for the Elementary I Credential holds as a minimum a bachelor degree from an accredited institution, Early Childhood credential, and three letters of recommendations. If the applicant does not hold an Early Childhood credential he/she must the Early Childhood overview. An additional charge of $400 for the overview will be assessed. MEINA Elementary I Teacher Education Course is affiliated with the American Montessori Society (AMS) and accredited by the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education. (MACTE).
MEINA Elementary I Teacher Education Course grants the AMS Elementary I (6 through 9) Credential to qualified persons who successfully complete the MEINA Elementary I Teacher Education Course based on the AMS and MACTE Elementary I (6 through 9) Course Competencies as stated in MACTE Accreditation Handbook.
Certification is dependent upon the recommendation of the consultant, the recommendation of the school administrator, and MEINA staff.
The standard expectation is that the teacher-candidate will complete all requirements for certification within a three (3) year time period following the program's official end of the academic phase for which the adult learner was enrolled. This period can be extended with the approval of the program director. The practicum must begin within two years of the end of the academic phase.
MEINA is an independent post-secondary institution that is not affiliated with a college or university. University of Tennessee at Martin and others, however, may grant credit for work successfully completed in this teacher education course. If an adult learner wishes to pursue the acquisition of credits, MEINA will cooperate by issuing official copies of course descriptions, course hours, and evaluations of the adult learner.
MEINA is authorized by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. This authorization must be renewed each year and is based on an evaluation by minimum standards concerning quality of education, ethical business practices, health and safety, and fiscal responsibility.
Applying candidate must submit a completed application to Montessori Educational Institute. A complete resume may be submitted in addition to the information required in the application. One official college transcript is required, along with three reference letters and an enrollment essay.
A $100 non-refundable application fee must accompany the application for the candidate to be considered.
Early Childhood Overview is held the week before the summer academic session begins. Fee is $400.00
This overview is required for applicants who do not hold an Early Childhood Montessori credential.
The dress code is casual with professionalism in mind. Adult learners are asked to wear shorts and skirts that are knee length. Tops and pants need to be modest considering that our time is often spent sitting on the floor.
